Opening Monterrey’s Holy Door at María Camino al Cielo Shrine

MEXICO, by Ignacio Romero •

Last December, as an important part of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, the Archbishop of Monterrey, Rogelio Cabrera López, authorized that indulgences could be received at María Camino al Cielo [Mary Way to Heaven] Shrine for this Holy Jubilee Year of Mercy.

The door to mercy

On Sunday, 24 January, the ceremony for the opening of the Shrine’s Holy Door was held during the 11:00 a.m. Mass, in the midst of truly spring-like weather, under a brilliant sun and pleasant fresh air. Fr. Jorge Ávila and Fr. Stefano Daneri con-celebrated the ceremony.

A Proclamation of Mercy began the celebration before a large number of pilgrims. After a moment of prayer, the priests blessed the water as the choir accompanied with songs. The priests and some Extraordinary Ministers of Communion proceeded to bless the participants with the water. Then, Fr. Stefano held the Gospel book and Fr. Jorge opened the door of the shrine so that Fr. Stefano could place the Gospel on the altar before the open door.

The celebration of the Mass concluded the ceremony. During his homily, Fr. Jorge emphasized the importance and the great blessing the Blessed Mother has given and all the graces that will be received through the Holy Door at the María Camino al Cielo Shrine.
