How to reach Schoenstatt

By Air

Flights from outside of Europe

The nearest international airport is Frankfurt/Main, situated about 100km from Schoenstatt.

Transport from Frankfurt/Main Airport to Schoenstatt:

Trains leave from the airport terminal (Fernbahnhof) to Koblenz Central Station (direct) or Vallendar (connecting train in Koblenz).  The trip takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes and costs ±€20.

  • Taxi: can be found directly outside the main train station.  Travel time: ca. 15 minutes  Cost: ± €20.00
  • Train: Trains to Vallendar leave every hour.
  • Bus: The bus terminal can be found to the right of the main entrance to the train station. The bus to Vallendar is Line 8. Get off at the “Vallendar Mitte” stop. Travel time: ±20 – 25 minutes.
    At certain times, it is possible to transfer to a second bus (Line 7 – Direction Höhr-Grenzhausen) from “Vallendar Mitte” to the “Schoenstatt” stop (a transfer ticket from the previous bus can be used).  Cost: ± €3.00

Transport from Vallendar Train Station to Schoenstatt
  • On foot: It is about 1,5km from Vallendar train station and 300m from the “Schoenstatt” bus stop (Line 7) to the Mother Shrine
  • Taxi:There is no public transport to the houses in Schoenstatt (particularly those on the mountains). It is best to take a taxi from the Vallendar train station. Taxi Lauterberg (0261-63066) knows the place well.

 

Rental Car

Cars can be rented at Frankfurt Airport. This is a highly recommended option for individual visitors, due to the lack of public transport in Schoenstatt. Travel time: ca. 1 hour and 15 mins.

Navigation systems can use the following directions:

  • Sonnenau: Hillscheider Strasse 7 – 56179 – Vallendar
  • Sonneck: Hoehrer Strasse 96 – 56179 – Vallendar

 

Flights within Europe

Low cost travel can be arranged via internet with the following airlines: Ryanair, Germanwings, and Easyjet. These airlines flying within Europe generally use smaller airports. The airports closest to Schoenstatt are: Frankfurt Hahn (Note: this is not the Frankfurt International Airport and is located about 100km from the Frankfurt/Main airport), Cologne/Bonn and Düsseldorf.

  • Train: Trains depart from the airport. At certain times it is possible to take a train directly to Vallendar (Vallendar Bahnhof). Or, take the Airport Shuttle Bus to Bonn, and then a train to Koblenz. Cost: ± €15. Travel Time: ± 1 hour and 30 minutes. From Koblenz or Vallendar to Schoenstatt, see above.
  • Rental car:
Transport from Düsseldorf to Schoenstatt
  • Train: Take the train from the airport to Koblenz via Cologne. It is possible to catch a connecting train in Cologne that goes directly to Vallendar.   Cost: ± €24. Travel Time: ± 1 hour and 30 minutes.
  • Rental Car: Trip takes between 1,5 hours to two hours, depending on traffic.

Taxi: It is possible to catch a taxi from all the airports to Schoenstatt. Prices vary from between 150 € to 200 €.

By Train

It is possible to reach Koblenz by train from any point in Europe. There is also a train station in Vallendar, but it only operates at specific times and trains stop here less frequently.

The Montabaur train station (for fast ICE trains) is about 20km from Schoenstatt but there is no connecting bus service and it is only possible to reach Schoenstatt by taxi.

By Car

On the road maps, highways are marked with an “A” and national roads are marked with a “B,” followed by their respective numbers.

Travelling on the A3 (Köln-Frankfurt) or the A61(Mönchenglandbach-Ludwigshafen), take the A48 (Trier-Koblenz) highway until the Bendorf/Neuwied/Vallendar exit on the eastern or right-hand side of the Rhine River.

Continue to Vallendar along the B42 national road and at the third traffic light, turn left on Westerwald Str.

Follow the yellow signs with white letters pointing towards Schoenstatt. Some 400m ahead of these signs, the Marian College (Marienschule) bearing a large MTA mosaic on its façade can be seen on the right-hand side. Schoenstatt begins here. 
A journey to Schoenstatt will not take more than 7 hours from any point in Germany.
